Apple Chips – Thin and crispy Apple Chips made in the microwave! All you need is a few minutesbefore you can devour this delicious and super healthy Fall snack.
Those recipe-introduction lines up there make me sound like the most annoyingcar salesman. Or, recipe salesman, in this case. My husband sells cars… I hope he’s not this annoying. 😉
HI, Friends! What’s goin’ on?Are you suiting up for the weekend? Just a few more hours and you’ll get to flop onto that couch and Facebook-all-the-people for the next 48 hours!
Oh, hey. Remember that one time when we didn’t have Facebook? Like, the times when your little cousin was YOUR LITTLE COUSIN and you didn’t have to know everything about her teenage life via the duck-face pictures onyour Facebook news feed??
Or, or, when your child’s teacher was just a teacher and you didn’t even know that she had a first name, but thanks to Facebook, she has a firstname ANDshe drinks beer on the weekends?! Remember those days before you knew all this stuff? WOW. That was thelife. At least all my duck face pictures are on a polaroid… and in my possession, only.
And, and, how about that one time when you baked sliced apples in the microwave and ate all the apple chips?? I felt like the healthiest being on the planet.
So, I don’t have patience. I know that baking apple chips for hours on end, in the oven, and letting them dry just a little bit longer is the correct way to go about this apple-chip biznass, but I just can’t.I’m as anxious as a child on early Christmas morning. I want all the things, and I want them now.Stat.
Look at the yellow tint up there… What a beautiful action shot! 😛 BUT, that picture serves a purpose, and it’s described in two words; SINGLE LAYER. Remember those words…
Just minutes after coming home from the Apple Orchard last weekend, I was slaving over the mandoline, trying to save my fingers while slicing my Honeycrisps. Without adding a single crystal of sugar, nor a drop of cinnamon, I popped them in the microwave oven and within minutes, I had my fix. It was wonderful.
Healthy. Crispy. Fall-y. Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Vegan, Vegetarian… I got it all covered.
You should totally make some while thinking about what to do with all them apples. Then, you should totally come back in a day or two and see what else I did with them apples!
Happy Weekend!
ENJOY!
Apple Chips {In the Microwave}

Thin and crispy Apple Chips made in the microwave!
Cut off the ends of an apple, core out the middle (I don't), and thinly slice into 1/8-inch rounds. This is best done with a Mandoline Slicer, but you can also use a sharp knife.
Line a microwave safe plate with parchment paper.
Place a few apple slices on parchment paper in one single layer. (You will have to do this in batches.)
Microwave for 4.5 to 5 minutes, or until edges of apples start to curl up.
Flip each slice and continue to microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until edges are crisp.
Remove from microwave and let stand 10 minutes, or until crispy and dry.
Serve immediately.
Notes
All microwaves are different; start watching the apples at about the 4-minute mark until you can determine the proper time needed to bake the apples in your microwave. If the apples are small, about 2-inches in diameter, decrease the time by 1-minute. RECIPE SOURCE: DIETHOOD

ARE APPLE CHIPS BETTER IN AIR FRYER OR DEHYDRATOR? I would always recommend using an air fryer as it has a far higher cooking temperature. This means you can dehydrate the apple a lot more quickly than you would if you made dehydrated apples. The air fryer really cuts down the recipe to a fraction of the time.
Treat apples before drying to prevent excessive browning. The treatments also help to preserve the flavor and vitamins of the fruit. The simplest pre-treatment is to soak freshly cut slices for 10 minutes in a solution of one part bottled lemon juice to one part water.
Try these apple chips, which are diabetes friendly and a healthy alternative to regular potato chips. Preheat the oven to 225˚F. Line a metal baking sheet with parchment paper. Wash the apples and use a mandolin to slice them very thinly.
Even if you don't have a formal dehydrator, you can still make dehydrated apple chips in the oven or in the air fryer. How long it takes to dehydrate apples varies on the method and the thickness of the slices, but the process can be as quick as 20 minutes, or as low-maintenance leisurely as 12 hours.
To get that added crispiness, in this recipe Dave soaks the potato in salted water before drying and frying. This helps to remove the starch from the potato which will add to the crispiness once cooked.
You can avoid this by thoroughly patting dry your potatoes before you place them in the air fryer. Secondly, you might be putting in too many potato chips so they aren't cooking evenly. You can have layers of potatoes, just make sure you give them a regular shake to toss them.
Why are my dehydrated apples not crispy? This means you haven't dehydrated your homemade apple chips for long enough. You can place them back into your dehydrator for longer.
Pretreating the apples will help prevent them from turning brown. To do this, mix 4 cups (1qt) water with 2 tablespoons ascorbic acid powder, or equal parts water and lemon juice, and soak the sliced apples for 3-5 minutes.
Dehydrated apples are finished drying when they feel rubbery and dry to the touch. To test, fold the dried apple slice in half. It will not stick together if it is dried properly. If the apples do stick when folded, dry the apples a little longer.
While apples are unlikely to cause spikes in your blood sugar levels, they do contain carbs. If you're counting carbs, be sure to account for the 27 grams of carbs an apple contains. Also, be sure to monitor your blood sugar after eating apples and see how they affect you personally.
Are apples good for diabetes? Apples can be a good snack for people with diabetes. Their fiber may help prevent spikes in blood sugar, and insulin levels, and fructose may be more beneficial for insulin levels than glucose. Apples also contain many nutrients.
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases recommends that people with diabetes include fruits in a balanced diet. However, some fruit products, such as juices and dried fruit, have a high sugar content. Avoiding these fruits can help reduce the risk of blood sugar spiking.
Baking apple chips is a slooooowwwww process. You bake them at 225F for 1 ½ to 2 ½ hours. I tested speeding up the process by baking them at 250F but more often than not it resulted in some apples being mushy, while others were burnt. So trust this slow process.
Yes, apples are a fantastic addition to your dog's diet. They provide vitamin A, vitamin C and dietary fibre. They also provide a way to keep your dog's teeth clean and can help freshen their breath. But before you feed apples to your dog, always remove the core and the seeds.
It's important the apples are the right thickness before dehydrating. Slice the apples approximately 1/3-inch thick—they should be no thicker than 1/2-inch thick. Otherwise, they won't dry well.
What temperature to dehydrate apples in air fryer? I like to go low and low, so I found that 150F (300C) was the perfect sweet spot. This will give you nicely dried apples that are light and have a nice crisp to them, but also a little of that nice leathery chew you can get from dried fruit.
Air fryers are capable of dehydrating food as they function quite similarly to dehydrators. But you must check your own individual air fryer to see what settings you need to use to dehydrate your own food. Your air fryer needs to be on a low heat to be able to dehydrate food, and it must be at a temperature below 45℃.
They had browned off really well, as you would expect in the oven. And here's the best bit, they were actually crispy, without any of the grease you get from cooking in the oven. Inside the air fryer is a grate which means any excess oil on the chips drips through too.
