When you retweet someone else's ideas, media, or links, you can add your thoughts above the quote. If you don't want to add anything, you can retweet without making any changes—both options automatically add the original user's X name and the word "retweeted" to the quote so your followers know the source. This wikiHow teaches you how to quote a tweet on X (formerly Twitter).

Things You Should Know

  • To quote a tweet, click or tap the retweet button and select "Quote". Add a comment, and select "Post".
  • Quote Tweets allow you to add extra commentary on the tweet, including attaching photos and gifs.
  • If you prefer to share a tweet someone else wrote, you can retweet it instead of quote tweeting it.

I want to include a paraphrased quote from an article and make a comment about it. If it is an exact quote, I believe I place quotation marks around it, but to shorten it to be within the 140 characters, how do I paraphrase it but show that the quote comes from the article?

    Community Answer

I think your best chance here would be to go ahead and shorten the quote, and after that sentence/paragraph maybe put something along the lines of "excerpt from ___" and put the author of the article in that blank space. Also, citing where you got the quote from would help; otherwise it's plagiarism.

      1. Open the Twitter app on your mobile device.
      2. Scroll to the tweet you want to quote.
      3. Tap the "retweet" button, which looks like two arrows forming a square.
      4. Select "Quote" from the pop-up menu.
      5. Add a comment, picture, GIF, or location if desired.
      6. Tap "Post" to share the quoted tweet to your profile.

      Using Desktop:

      1. Go to in a web browser.

These steps allow you to add extra commentary to a tweet, including attaching photos and GIFs. If you prefer to share a tweet someone else wrote without adding your own commentary, you can simply retweet it instead of quote tweeting it.

      Paraphrasing a Quote

When paraphrasing a quote from an article, it's important to indicate that the quote comes from the article and to credit the author. You can shorten the quote to fit within the character limit and then add a note such as "excerpt from [article name]" to attribute the source. Additionally, citing where you got the quote from is essential to avoid plagiarism.

By following these guidelines, you can effectively quote tweets and paraphrase quotes while giving proper credit to the original source.
