Love Potion Valentine's Day Singing Time Idea - Camille's Primary Ideas (2024)

I don’t always go all out but occasionally, I LOVE to do it! And honestly, this lesson appears to require a lot of effort, but it’s really quite simple. To pull it off, all you need are some common household items.

• 6 spoons (not clear)
• 6 various colors of food coloring
• Baking soda (not baking powder!)
• 6 clear cups or glass jars
• White vinegar
• Large cookie sheets
• 6 sheets of colored cardstock that match the food coloring colors
• Unsharpened pencils/wands/rhythm sticks (one for each child)

Optional gift idea: pass out Valentine’s Day pencils as a Valentine’s Day gift and attaching it to this printable:

Write the following 6 songs on colored card stock (or any 6 songs will work). Hang them on the board so the song titles are hidden:

1. Love One Another
2. I’ll Walk with You
3. I Love to See the Temple
4. I Feel My Savior’s Love
5. Jesus Said Love Everyone
6. I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus

For the activity, tell the Primary that they will be creating “love potions.” Each potion relates to a Primary song about love.

Pass out a Valentine’s Day pencil to the Primary. As you mix one of the spoons into one of the jars of vinegar (on a cookie sheet), have them say “Abracadabra,” or “I Love singing time,” etc. and point with their wands at the potion. Watch it bubble over and create a color.

Turn over the paper that coordinates with the color that bubbles up and sing the song. Post the words as needed.

For additional movement do the following with each song using pencils:

• Draw a heart when the word “Love” is sung
• Pitch lead
• “Bounce” to the beat in an upward/downward motion with a stronger beat on the first count of each measure
• Pass pencils to the rhythm (create a circle or pass in an “S” shape)
• Use the attached Wand Action cards (print on cardstock and cut in half)

Repeat with each color until all the potions have been mixed and all the songs sung.

To simplify this activity, omit the “love potion” portion and simply sing the songs using the activities with the pencils.
