The scallop shell is one of the most common symbols of Baptism because Jesus (as well as others) are very commonly portrade as being baptized by having water poured over them with a shell. At the baptism of all of my children, the priest used a golden dish shaped like a scallop shell to baptize them. Catholics find shells especially handy since we baptize infants and generally pour the water over their head rather than going with a full on immersion. So what better symbol to serve at a baptism or when learning about baptism than some beautiful seashell krispie treats?!

This recipe is totally easy because the shells are made from rice krispie treats. What could be more simple and still this beautiful?!

Ingredients Needed For Seashell Krispie Treats

  • 6 cups Rice Krispie cereal (or equivalent of off brand krispie rice cereal)
  • 1 bag of small marshmallows (10 ounces)
  • 3 Tbs butter
  • White candy wafer melts or vanilla almond bark (I like to use the Wilton brand candy melts)
  • Silver sprinkles and candy coated chocolate pearls (aka Sixlets, which can usually be found in the cake decorating aisle of Wal-Mart or Michael’s)

How To Make Shell Krispie Treats:

  1. Take a 13×9 baking sheet and line with with wax paper, then spritz it with spray oil to keep treats from sticking.
  2. Melt the butter in a large pot over low heat. When the butter is fully melted, dump in your bag of mini marshmallows and allow to melt, stirring constantly. When fully melted, remove pan from heat.
  3. Pour in the cereal and toss until coated with the marshmallow mixture, but try not to over mix it. That will result in a dryer rice krispie treat.
  4. Spread into your prepared baking sheet with a greased piece of wax paper (the paper off your stick of butter works great for this). Allow for the mixture to cool completely before moving on.
  5. Use your shell shaped cookie cutter to cut out the treats. If the treats seem loose, you can press additional rice krispie mixture into the cookie cutter before releasing the shape onto wax paper.
  6. Reshape the scraps of the krispie treat mixture into the cookie cutter as well, using all of it you can that’s left in your baking pan.
  7. Place your white candy melts into a microwave safe bowl and microwave on high heat, stirring the mixture each 30 seconds, until it’s compltely melted. Be careful not to overhead them. If the candy seems too thick, it can be thinned a bit using a vegetable shortening or coconut oil. Do not add water to the mixture.
  8. Take your shell krispie treats and dip one side of them into the candy melts. Allow the extra to run back into your bowl.
  9. Place your shell on wax paper and put the extra sugar and pearl on immediately.
  10. Allow them to cool completely before serving or storing.

These are such beautiful and meaningful treats to serve at a baptism party! I just love when even the menu can reflect symbolism of the sacrament or occasion.
